Wesleyan University — Casper Life Sciences Building

Middletown, Connecticut, USA

James Burleigh was delighted to contribute to the prestigious Casper Life Sciences Building at Wesleyan University, a landmark 195,000 sq ft facility designed by internationally recognised Payette Architects. Bringing together teaching, research and collaboration, the building is centred around a spectacular four-storey, light-filled Commons, creating an inspiring social heart for students and staff.

At the centre of this space is a striking 29-foot bespoke zig-zag table, designed and manufactured by James Burleigh in five interconnected sections, alongside complementary benches and stools. Furniture from the James Burleigh collection is also positioned throughout Levels 3 and 4, including our Osprey high tables paired with Magnus high stools, providing versatile spaces for meeting, studying and informal collaboration.

The project provided an opportunity to demonstrate our London-based manufacturing and bespoke capabilities, creating furniture specifically tailored to the scale, character and demands of this exceptional academic environment. From the substantial zig-zag table to the carefully considered collection pieces, each element combines robust contract performance with the material warmth and refined simplicity synonymous with James Burleigh.

We were delighted that Payette Architects specified the James Burleigh collection for this prestigious project and to work alongside W.B. Mason, who procured the scheme. Our thanks also go to Boston Modern Furniture, our Boston representative, whose expertise and support helped bring this project to fruition. Designed and manufactured in London, installed in Connecticut, and made for people to meet, work, learn and connect.
